Title: Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four – Concept Illustration for High Relief Coin
Description
This is the original 2D concept illustration for the "The Sign of Four" silver coin. Designing for numismatics requires a unique approach where the 2D artwork must serve as a perfect blueprint for a future 3D high-relief sculpture.
The scene captures the dramatic moment of discovery within the Baker Street apartment. The challenge was to balance a complex interior with three distinct characters while maintaining a clear focal point for the minting process.
Design Strategy:
Composition for Tondo: The artwork is meticulously structured within a circular frame, using the interior's perspective lines (carpet, furniture) to create a sense of depth that will translate into a multi-layered relief.
Technical Planning:
Gold Accents: The yellow elements (Holmes's pipe and the treasure) were pre-planned for Selective Gold Plating.
Color Pop: The blue flowers were designed for Digital UV Printing, providing a modern contrast to the classical theme.
Victorian Authenticity: Extensive research went into the costume design (Mary Morstan’s bustle dress, Watson’s morning coat) and the period-accurate wallpaper and furniture patterns.
Software & Process:
Line Art: Focused on clean, precise linework to guide the 3D engraver.
Tone & Contrast: The grayscale values were carefully chosen to indicate the intended heights and depths of the final physical relief.
